Degenerative Disc Disease
Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is the loss of the structural and functional integrity of the disc. It is a part of the natural process of growing older. Unfortunately, as we age, our intervertebral discs lose their flexibility, elasticity, and shock absorbing characteristics. When disc disease or disease of the spine occurs, it can ultimately lead to a disc that herniates or ruptures, the soft nucleus spurts out through a tear in the annulus, and can compress a nerve root. The nucleus can push out on either side of the disc or in some cases both sides. The amount of pain associated with a disc rupture often depends upon the amount of nucleus that breaks through the annulus, and whether it compresses a nerve.
At Summerville Spine and Disc Center, the remarkable DRX9000 spinal decompression system is specially designed to halt or delay the progression of this disease. To learn more, please call our office today to make an appointment for a free consultation.
Degenerative Joint Disease
Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD) causes deterioration of the joint cartilage (the softer parts of bones, which cushion their connections to each other) and the formation of new bone (bone spurs) at the margins of the joints.
Herniated Discs
A problem with a bulging or herniated disc can be so serious as to require surgery, and even then the success rate for these very invasive surgeries cannot guarantee that the patient will not be impaired, perhaps even crippled for the remainder of their life. On the other hand, minor disc bulges, if detected and treated before they develop into more serious issues, are effectively managed without the need for surgery.
Understanding what is going on in your spine is the key! It is therefore very important that if you feel that you may have a disc-related problem, you should be evaluated by a qualified doctor.
At Summerville Spine & Disc Center, we are highly trained in detecting disc-related problems, when to treat them, and when to work with other healthcare specialists to get the best results for our patients.
What Causes Disc Problems?
Discs are the soft but strong cushions that separate the bones ( vertebrae) in your spine and absorb shock as you move. Repeated strain over time, an injury, or sudden, forceful movements can damage discs and irritate nerves, causing pain, numbness, or tingling in your back, legs, neck and arms.
Healthy Disc
A disc has a spongy, gel-like center ( nucleus) and a tough outer ring ( annulus). The vertebrae roll back and forth and rotate on the discs, allowing you to move easily.
Bulging Disc
With repeated stress, a disc can wear down. The disc's nucleus may begin to bulge into the annulus and irritate nearby nerves.
Ruptured Disc
Sudden trauma can cause a disc to rupture. The nucleus pushes through the annulus and presses on nearby nerves, causing severe pain.
Our office offers a unique treatment for disc problems that is especially effective. Call our office today for an appointment or to discuss your concerns.
